The conference titled ’Writers’ Economy in the 19th-20th Centuries: Undertaking and Investment from Kazinczy to Jókai and beyond’ was held online on the 29th and 30th of January, 2021. The event was organised by the MTA-BTK Momentum Political Economy of Hungarian Literature Research Group and University of Debrecen.
The main topics of presentations included writers as economic operators, the authors’ successful and failed attempts at economic activity, the challenges of publishing and financing, and the relations between the press and literary production.
The presentations were not only diverse in themes but also rich in details. The speakers managed to synthesize their findings – which were often transparently diplayed on charts – with their resourceful interpretations of some well-known and some less widely known works of literature.
